Green Squirrel Energy designs renewable installs that stay inside the home fuse limit

Load limiting specialists for modern electrified homes.

Green Squirrel Leading The Way!

Heat pumps, solar, battery storage, EV chargers and hot water systems can work brilliantly together, but only when the electrical demand is controlled properly. Green Squirrel Energy specialises in load limiting and intelligent demand management so homes can electrify safely without exceeding the capacity of the incoming supply.

80A

Typical domestic cut-out we design around

1 home

Multiple high-load technologies coordinated as one system

Real time

Monitoring, prioritisation and automatic response

Why load limiting matters in renewable homes

Traditional homes were rarely designed for several large electrical loads running at the same time. A modern all-electric property can easily combine a heat pump, battery inverter, EV charger, electric cooking, immersion heating and a Sunamp unit. The result can be a peak demand that pushes beyond the rating of the main fuse unless the system is designed properly.

Heat pump integration

We account for compressor startup, defrost operation, immersion backup and seasonal operating patterns.

Solar coordination

We use onsite generation to support flexible loads and reduce imported current at the same moment demand rises.

Battery control

Battery discharge can shave peaks, while charge rates can be limited when the property is already close to the fuse threshold.

EV charging management

Dynamic chargers can ramp up or down in real time so the car charges safely without taking the whole house over the limit.

The physics, explained simply

The service fuse does not care which appliance is using the electricity. It only sees total current flowing into the property. When several high-power devices operate together, their current adds up. Load limiting is the practice of measuring that combined current and controlling flexible equipment so the total stays below a safe setpoint.

So, as a simple example, a 7.2kW EV charger on a 230V supply draws roughly 31A. A 3kW immersion or Sunamp charging element draws about 13A. A heat pump may pull 10A to 20A or more depending on model and operating condition. Add cooking loads, kettles, showers or battery charging and the total can quickly move toward an 80A supply limit.

1

Measure

A CT clamp or metering device measures the import current at the incoming tails in real time.

2

Predict

The controller compares live demand with a chosen limit, for example 65A to 75A on an 80A cut-out to maintain headroom.

3

Respond

Flexible loads are reduced, delayed or paused before the fuse rating is exceeded. This can be smooth modulation or simple load shedding.

4

Recover

Once house demand falls or solar and battery support becomes available, those flexible loads can ramp back up automatically.

How Green Squirrel Energy applies this across renewable technologies

We do not treat each product in isolation. We look at the whole property as one electrical ecosystem and assign control priorities that fit the client’s comfort, hot water needs, vehicle charging habits and supply limitations.

Priority 1

Essential house loads

Lighting, general sockets, refrigeration, controls and critical household demand remain protected.

Priority 2

Space heating stability

The heat pump is managed to preserve comfort while avoiding unnecessary peaks from backup or boost functions.

Priority 3

Thermal & battery storage

Sunamp charging and battery charge or discharge are timed and modulated to support the whole home.

Priority 4

Flexible EV charging

The EV charger typically provides the greatest controllable headroom and can dynamically ramp according to the remaining capacity.

What a properly designed load-limited system does

Morning peak

Kettle, shower, cooking and heat pump demand rise. EV charging throttles down automatically and Sunamp charging waits.

Midday solar

PV output increases. The battery stores excess generation or the Sunamp unit charges using available onsite energy.

Evening return

Cooking and occupancy load increase. Battery discharge helps reduce grid import while flexible loads are limited.

Overnight off-peak

When household demand is low, the system can safely prioritise EV charging, hot water or battery charging without breaching the supply limit.

Why clients choose Green Squirrel Energy

We position load limiting as part of good engineering, not an afterthought. That means thinking through current draw, control logic, headroom, appliance behaviour and real occupant usage before the install is signed off.

Frequently asked questions

These are the questions homeowners, developers and specifiers most often ask when they want high-performance electrification on a limited incoming supply.

Can you install a heat pump on an 80A fuse?

Often yes, but not by guesswork. The answer depends on the property demand profile, backup heating arrangement, EV charging, storage strategy and the control logic used across the system.

Solar helps, but only when it is generating at the same time the load is present. Load limiting is still needed because the service fuse is challenged by instantaneous current, not annual energy totals.

Load shedding switches selected circuits off at a threshold. Dynamic limiting is more refined: it continuously adjusts controllable loads, such as an EV charger or inverter, to stay below the setpoint.

Load limiting expertise for the next generation of renewable installs

If your project includes a heat pump, solar, battery storage, EV charger, Sunamp or other high-demand electrical technology, Green Squirrel Energy can help design a control strategy that protects the incoming supply while delivering comfort, performance and future readiness.

I honestly can’t recommend Green Squirrel Energy highly enough! From the very first survey, I felt like I was dealing with people who genuinely cared about doing the job properly rather than just making a sale. After discovering our roof had been poorly installed by another company, they took the time to explain everything clearly, showing us exactly what was wrong and why it needed replacing. There was never any pressure—just honest, professional advice that gave us complete confidence in their recommendations. The workmanship has been absolutely outstanding. Our new roof looks beautiful, and the integrated solar panels are so sleek that they blend in perfectly. The team also installed a Tesla Powerwall and handled all of the complicated electrical upgrades, including liaising with the DNO and sorting out the export limitation process. They made what could have been a very stressful experience completely hassle-free. Every member of the team was friendly, respectful and incredibly hardworking. They kept us informed throughout the project, left everything tidy each day, and their attention to detail was second to none. We now have total peace of mind knowing our home is protected by a properly installed, high-quality roof, and it’s wonderful seeing our electricity bills reduce while generating our own clean energy. If you’re looking for a company that values quality, honesty and customer service, Green Squirrel Energy is the one to choose. Thank you to everyone involved—you’ve completely transformed our home, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend you to family and friends!

Recently had a Worcester Bosch air conditioning system installed and I'm really happy with it, installation was carried out professionally, with great attention to detail. Anthony, Alan and the guys were great from start to finish, they took pride in delivering a first-class installation. Had it for over a week now and It’s made a huge difference to my room and the upstairs area, delighted with both its performance and the quality of the installation. A special mention also goes to the Green Squirrel Energy Project Manager, who was communicative throughout, kept me informed every step and worked hard to find the right solution during a period when there was an equipment shortage. Especially in the summer where there is demand and waiting lists elsewhere, they gave me a date within 2 weeks and kept their promise, their commitment to customer service and problem-solving really stood out. Overall, an excellent experience! Highly recommend them to anyone considering air conditioning installation

When my gas boiler broke down and was not worth repairing I knew it was time to investigate an air source heat pump. I have a dormer bungalow built in 1962. 5 months before I had installed a new insulated roof, solar panels and a 9kW battery so a heat pump is in line with my eco values. I had 3 quotes and each one suggested that a different level of work was required concerning changing the pipework and radiators. Alan from Green Squirrel’s approach made the most sense to me. He was recommended to me by Octopus. From the beginning he was highly attentive. He understands the importance of the quality of the install in order for the heat pump to work well. Alan invested many hours in the planing stage before I gave him the job. He appreciated the huge financial investment so was keen for me to understand how this system works and to ensure that my home was made suitable. The whole team were outstanding and the work was completed in the time quoted. As I needed new pipework there was some disruption but all was made as easy as possible. I felt that both Alan and Simon, the engineer, really wanted me to be happy with all the work and for everything to work well. So far the heat pump is working perfectly though I have not had my first winter yet. I have felt very happy with the after install service as Alan has kept in touch and encouraged me to contact him with any questions or issues. I have no difficulty in recommending their work.

I recently had a full renewable energy system installed by Green Squirrel Energy at my house in Lymm. I first reached out to Alan at Green Squirrel about 9 months before I actually needed anyone on site. It was right at the start of a full house renovation and, even at that early stage, I could tell they were the right fit. Alan didn’t just give me a generic quote; he went away, had the proper calculations done, and worked through a solid plan for the property. We had a bit of back and forth on the final design—which I really appreciated—because it meant we landed on a setup that actually suited the house rather than a "one size fits all" solution. The project was massive: Solar, Powerwall 3, a full heating system, including a heat pump and underfloor heating throughout the downstairs. The installation was handled by Simon and his team, and they were great. If you’ve ever done a big renovation, you know how much of a headache it is coordinating different trades, but the Green Squirrel guys worked brilliantly with my builder to keep things on track. They weren't just in and out; the quality of the finish was clearly important to them. Now that the dust has settled and the longer days are finally here, the system is performing exactly as Alan promised. The house is perfectly comfortable year-round (the underfloor heating is a game-changer), and seeing the solar and battery kick in now the sun is out is a great feeling If you want renewable tech installed by a local firm that are knowledgeable, high quality and actually seem to care, I’d highly recommend Green Squirrel.

Alan and his team did a fantastic job for us. The advice was sound, the work well planned and expertly delivered by considerate professionals. There was none of the common heavy sales patter, instead considered unpressurised advice. Alan went out of his way to advise on any (occasional and unavoidable) changes to plan. He also managed the project between the different parts of his team (e.g. roofers, electricians, etc.). I would have no hesitation in recommending him and the Green Squirrel team.

Very good advice and support from Green Squirrel Energy. Background to this - heat pump installed in 2012 (fairly early adopter). The heat pump has always worked ok - in my view - but I have not been so confident in the control system. We have struggled to get house warm. With increasing frustration with the lack of F2F support from original installer I searched online to see if anyone locally and found Green Squirrel Energy from Knutsford (we live close). Contacted them more in hope than expectation - but they quickly phoned back and I engaged them to do a diagnostic on the system. Simon came to visit and they came up with a plan to improve - which wasn't going to be cheap...but I was up for that. Credit to them - they discussed amongst themselves and came to the view that although their proposal was perhaps ideal, it was difficult to guarantee the outcome given the original install. They then came up with a more cost effective solution with which I agreed to proceed. Credit to them that they didn't try to sell me the most expensive solution.... The solution was a new (Hive) control system which Simon and their electrician installed in a morning. I have also installed Hive TRV's on all the radiators. (I should also mention that as part of this work I have also undertaken a DIY change to 2 downstairs radiators and have installed a Strada Hybrid - so I also need to give a 'shout out' to David and his team at the Radiator Centre, Leamington Spa) Alan and Simon also took the time to educate me on how to get the best out of air source heat pump system by leaving it running 24/7 - I was treating it like a gas fired central heating system, but no-one had ever told me different. The result has been transformational - we now have a comfortably warm home for the first time in 13 years. Yes it's costing some money to run, but we were spending a fair amount before and weren't warm... I am very pleased with the service and support we have had from Alan and Simon and give them respect for coming up with a more cost effective solution when they could have sold me something more expensive.

I used Green Squirrel as a one stop shop for the design and installation of my underfloor heating system combined with an Octopus air source heat pump. The whole process was very efficiently managed . The installers and technical leads, Simon Fagan and Andrew Hassell worked very efficiently on the install, showing me how everything worked and demonstrating the Octopus app (which is, like everything I have dealt with from Octopus, absolutely fab!). I am looking forward to a very cosy winter in my new house. Many thanks to you all.
