What you'll learn
Although heat pumps are a low-maintenance heating option, it is still important to have them serviced regularly to make sure they are performing safely and efficiently.
- Why should I get my heat pump serviced?
- How often should I have my heat pump serviced?
- What does a heat pump service include?
- What other maintenance does a heat pump need?
- How much does a heat pump service cost?
Heat pumps work by extracting environmental energy (air, water or heat from the ground) which is then converted using a refrigerant inside the heat pump to generate heating and hot water for your home.
They are a more efficient method of heating your home compared to gas boilers but similarly to boilers, heat pumps still require a service. All checks on a heat pump should be carried out by a qualified MCS heating engineer.
Regardless if you have an air, ground or water source heat pump, having it serviced can help the longevity of the heat pump. On average, a heat pump can work for at least 15 years. However, a well maintained heat pump could operate efficiently for up to 20-25+ years.
During the service, the engineer will check the efficiency and performance of your heat pump to ensure the system is working correctly and delivering the desired comfort levels to your home.
A heat pump service will ensure the validity of your warranty. All heat pumps installed by Green Squirrel energy heat pumps come with a standard guarantee of from the manufacturer (often with an option to extend up to seven years)
How often should I have my heat pump serviced?
Whilst heat pumps have a robust design with very few moving parts, you should still have them serviced once a year after the initial heat pump installation. The service must be carried out by an MCS heating engineer.
We recommend having your heat pump serviced in the warmer months so when the temperatures drop in the winter, you will then be confident that your heat pump is operating at maximum efficiency.
What does a heat pump service include?
A heat pump service covers a range of tests, checks and inspections to assess the safety and efficiency of the heat pump. It is always carried out by our qualified MCS heating engineers.
The service includes:
- Full visual checks
- Temperature checks
- System checks (visual and diagnostic)
- All relevant pipework pressure tested (including leaks)
- Electrical circuits tested
- Professional advice on system set up and product use

Air source heat pump servicing
Air source heat pumps are the most common system in the UK as they are easy to install compared to their counterparts. They extract thermal energy from the air and convert this into heating and hot water for your home.
Air source heat pumps are designed to work in cold temperatures and are suitable for a range of homes, from a small apartment to a large detached home.
As they are an external unit, they are more likely to be subject to harsh weather conditions meaning it is very important they are serviced. The engineer will check the evaporator is free from debris to ensure maximum airflow and also inspect the fan blade to ensure this is free from obstruction.
