Three phase electrical Supply Survey,
Design and Installation

Green Squirrel specialise in the installation project management and all aspects of 3-phase electrical supply.

Green Squirrel are Experts in 3-phase

For homes installing a number of renewables  you may need to upgrade your current power supply from a single phase to 3-phase supply.  As part of the free survey we offer we will advise you on whether or not the 3 -phase upgrade would be required.  We liaise with the DNO to ensure your upgrade is completed correctly with our team of expert electricians.

This guide will help you understand your current setup and the steps for upgrading your supply to 3-phase power.

Below is the 3-phase power upgrade required for  a full renewables and gas zero home upgrade.

The one stop shop for all renewable installation and enabling works

Understanding 3-Phase Power Supply

A 3-phase supply installed in your home by your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO). The Network Operator is the company that manages the energy supply for your area. Green squirrel energy on your behalf  apply to the DNO to have the work approved. The DNO is the only entity allowed to upgrade the supply.  Green squirrel complete all the internal works required including the install of the three phase system.

Single-phase electricity is standard in UK homes and is used to power the appliances we use daily. Higher power equipment such as renewables will require a 3-phase supply.

An advantage of the 3-phase supply uses less conductor material to transmit the current, this makes it more economical than a standard single-phase supply.

How to upgrade to 3-Phase Power Supply

1. Green squirrel energy will be able to conduct a free survey for your renewable.

2. We contact Your Distribution Network Operator (DNO).

3. We can Obtain a Quotation for the Upgrade.

4. Agree on the Trenching and Excavation Requirements.

5. Schedule the Work with the DNO.

6. Prepare for Trenching and Cable Access.

7. Have the DNO Connect the New Three-Phase Cables.

8. Complete Safety Checks and Certification.

9. Arrange for Your Electricity Supplier to Install a New Meter.

Finding Your DNO

Green squirrel expert team will provide a free service for your upgrade and evaluation of weather the upgrade is required.

We need to understand who the local Distribution Network Operator is in your area. We find out by entering your postcode via the Energy Networks Association website. The results will tell us who your electricity DNO is, it also provides details for your Gas DNO along with contact details for each provider.

How does 3-phase electricity work?

The ‘phase’ of an electricity supply refers to how the load is dispersed. 3-phase power consists of 3 wires running on the same frequency, each wire is separated by 120 degrees.

When one wave is at its peak, the other two are less so, and this pattern repeats. This means that power is always being supplied at a consistent rate.

The constant rate of the 3 phases ensures that power transfer is constant and can handle a heavier load at a supply of around 3 times that of a single phase.

How do I know if I have 3-phase power

If you are planning to install a renewables install you must first discover if your property already has a 3-phase supply in place.  This list of steps helps to determine the phase of your current supply.

Check the consumer unit ( the fuse board). If your consumer unit houses 3 service fuses, you have a 3-phase power supply. If there is only 1 service fuse then your supply is single phase.

Check your Electricity Bill. Many electricity suppliers will list the phase of a supply within the bill

Check the electricity meter. Some (but not all) electricity meters will indicate your property’s type of power supply. The meter may not describe the supply as 3-phase, it could be referred to as poly-phase or tri-phase

Phase 3 for renewable installations at residential properties

Residential properties are able to upgrade their electricity supply from single-phase to 3 phase supply. Green squirrel energy initially contact your local Distribution Network Operator to determine if the upgrade is possible before proceeding.

Costs and Installation of 3-phase power supply

The cost of an installation will depend entirely on the complexity and technical challenges facing the local DNO carrying out the work.

The majority of people can expect to pay over £3,500 (+VAT) to upgrade to phase 3. Why do costs vary so much? Let’s look at the factors that can impact costs.

Factors impacting installation costs

Digging a solution for external cable from your house will likely need upgrading which means the DNO must compete works required.

In some cases, the DNO may need to dig up the main road, there are council charges and there may be additional costs for two-way traffic lights or diversions if required.

3 phase power Installation process

3 phase power Installation process

The Process

The DNO or contractor will complete the necessary dig.  The electricity cables supplying your property will likely be underground and therefore a large trench will need to be dug in order to access the cable (you may be able to do this yourself to reduce costs, agree with the DNO in advance). The DNO will likely need to dig outside your property too, on the footpath  or main road.

The cable will be replaced and a new electricity meter box will be fitted on an external property wall, you can discuss the location of the new box with our engineer. This box is known as a viewing cabinet and can be seen in the diagram above.

The engineers will connect the cables and spend some time running through a series of safety procedures to ensure your setup is correct and safe to use.  The DNO will fill in the holes.

To finish up your electricity supplier needs to visit the property and install a brand new meter in the meter box.   In the example above we liaised with Octopus energy to complete the works.  The electricity supplier and your DNO are two different entities, the supplier is the company you pay your bills for you to avoid having no power overnight, it is vital that you arrange for your supplier to visit on the same day as the phase 3 power upgrade.

What is the benefit of 3-phase power?

We now know that cost and effort in upgrading your electricity supply to phase 3 can be significant, so what are the benefits?

Increased power output is the obvious benefit of the upgrade, the voltage of 3-phase power is up to 415V compared to 230V from a single-phase supply. This allows you to run 22kW EV chargers, heat pumps, inverters etc.

Consistent power output is achieved with a 3-phase supply, a single-phase supply can be less consistent in its delivery of electricity.

Less prone to outages due to the consistent power output, the constant flow reduces the possibility of failure.

I honestly can’t recommend Green Squirrel Energy highly enough! From the very first survey, I felt like I was dealing with people who genuinely cared about doing the job properly rather than just making a sale. After discovering our roof had been poorly installed by another company, they took the time to explain everything clearly, showing us exactly what was wrong and why it needed replacing. There was never any pressure—just honest, professional advice that gave us complete confidence in their recommendations. The workmanship has been absolutely outstanding. Our new roof looks beautiful, and the integrated solar panels are so sleek that they blend in perfectly. The team also installed a Tesla Powerwall and handled all of the complicated electrical upgrades, including liaising with the DNO and sorting out the export limitation process. They made what could have been a very stressful experience completely hassle-free. Every member of the team was friendly, respectful and incredibly hardworking. They kept us informed throughout the project, left everything tidy each day, and their attention to detail was second to none. We now have total peace of mind knowing our home is protected by a properly installed, high-quality roof, and it’s wonderful seeing our electricity bills reduce while generating our own clean energy. If you’re looking for a company that values quality, honesty and customer service, Green Squirrel Energy is the one to choose. Thank you to everyone involved—you’ve completely transformed our home, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend you to family and friends!

Recently had a Worcester Bosch air conditioning system installed and I'm really happy with it, installation was carried out professionally, with great attention to detail. Anthony, Alan and the guys were great from start to finish, they took pride in delivering a first-class installation. Had it for over a week now and It’s made a huge difference to my room and the upstairs area, delighted with both its performance and the quality of the installation. A special mention also goes to the Green Squirrel Energy Project Manager, who was communicative throughout, kept me informed every step and worked hard to find the right solution during a period when there was an equipment shortage. Especially in the summer where there is demand and waiting lists elsewhere, they gave me a date within 2 weeks and kept their promise, their commitment to customer service and problem-solving really stood out. Overall, an excellent experience! Highly recommend them to anyone considering air conditioning installation

When my gas boiler broke down and was not worth repairing I knew it was time to investigate an air source heat pump. I have a dormer bungalow built in 1962. 5 months before I had installed a new insulated roof, solar panels and a 9kW battery so a heat pump is in line with my eco values. I had 3 quotes and each one suggested that a different level of work was required concerning changing the pipework and radiators. Alan from Green Squirrel’s approach made the most sense to me. He was recommended to me by Octopus. From the beginning he was highly attentive. He understands the importance of the quality of the install in order for the heat pump to work well. Alan invested many hours in the planing stage before I gave him the job. He appreciated the huge financial investment so was keen for me to understand how this system works and to ensure that my home was made suitable. The whole team were outstanding and the work was completed in the time quoted. As I needed new pipework there was some disruption but all was made as easy as possible. I felt that both Alan and Simon, the engineer, really wanted me to be happy with all the work and for everything to work well. So far the heat pump is working perfectly though I have not had my first winter yet. I have felt very happy with the after install service as Alan has kept in touch and encouraged me to contact him with any questions or issues. I have no difficulty in recommending their work.

I recently had a full renewable energy system installed by Green Squirrel Energy at my house in Lymm. I first reached out to Alan at Green Squirrel about 9 months before I actually needed anyone on site. It was right at the start of a full house renovation and, even at that early stage, I could tell they were the right fit. Alan didn’t just give me a generic quote; he went away, had the proper calculations done, and worked through a solid plan for the property. We had a bit of back and forth on the final design—which I really appreciated—because it meant we landed on a setup that actually suited the house rather than a "one size fits all" solution. The project was massive: Solar, Powerwall 3, a full heating system, including a heat pump and underfloor heating throughout the downstairs. The installation was handled by Simon and his team, and they were great. If you’ve ever done a big renovation, you know how much of a headache it is coordinating different trades, but the Green Squirrel guys worked brilliantly with my builder to keep things on track. They weren't just in and out; the quality of the finish was clearly important to them. Now that the dust has settled and the longer days are finally here, the system is performing exactly as Alan promised. The house is perfectly comfortable year-round (the underfloor heating is a game-changer), and seeing the solar and battery kick in now the sun is out is a great feeling If you want renewable tech installed by a local firm that are knowledgeable, high quality and actually seem to care, I’d highly recommend Green Squirrel.

Alan and his team did a fantastic job for us. The advice was sound, the work well planned and expertly delivered by considerate professionals. There was none of the common heavy sales patter, instead considered unpressurised advice. Alan went out of his way to advise on any (occasional and unavoidable) changes to plan. He also managed the project between the different parts of his team (e.g. roofers, electricians, etc.). I would have no hesitation in recommending him and the Green Squirrel team.

Very good advice and support from Green Squirrel Energy. Background to this - heat pump installed in 2012 (fairly early adopter). The heat pump has always worked ok - in my view - but I have not been so confident in the control system. We have struggled to get house warm. With increasing frustration with the lack of F2F support from original installer I searched online to see if anyone locally and found Green Squirrel Energy from Knutsford (we live close). Contacted them more in hope than expectation - but they quickly phoned back and I engaged them to do a diagnostic on the system. Simon came to visit and they came up with a plan to improve - which wasn't going to be cheap...but I was up for that. Credit to them - they discussed amongst themselves and came to the view that although their proposal was perhaps ideal, it was difficult to guarantee the outcome given the original install. They then came up with a more cost effective solution with which I agreed to proceed. Credit to them that they didn't try to sell me the most expensive solution.... The solution was a new (Hive) control system which Simon and their electrician installed in a morning. I have also installed Hive TRV's on all the radiators. (I should also mention that as part of this work I have also undertaken a DIY change to 2 downstairs radiators and have installed a Strada Hybrid - so I also need to give a 'shout out' to David and his team at the Radiator Centre, Leamington Spa) Alan and Simon also took the time to educate me on how to get the best out of air source heat pump system by leaving it running 24/7 - I was treating it like a gas fired central heating system, but no-one had ever told me different. The result has been transformational - we now have a comfortably warm home for the first time in 13 years. Yes it's costing some money to run, but we were spending a fair amount before and weren't warm... I am very pleased with the service and support we have had from Alan and Simon and give them respect for coming up with a more cost effective solution when they could have sold me something more expensive.

I used Green Squirrel as a one stop shop for the design and installation of my underfloor heating system combined with an Octopus air source heat pump. The whole process was very efficiently managed . The installers and technical leads, Simon Fagan and Andrew Hassell worked very efficiently on the install, showing me how everything worked and demonstrating the Octopus app (which is, like everything I have dealt with from Octopus, absolutely fab!). I am looking forward to a very cosy winter in my new house. Many thanks to you all.
